Very shortly after the announcement, the new ultra-high declination of the supercar from Ingolstadt is preparing to make its debut on the road: it is Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD, top configuration – for contents and dynamic qualities – of the R8 lineup, ready to debut on the market.
In relation to the previous model (the starting point is the same, and moreover common to all the other R8 versions: the Audi Space Frame body in aluminum and CFRP, ie plastic resins reinforced with carbon fiber), the new R8 V10 Performance RWD brings not only a substantial injection of power (30 HP) and driving force (10 nm) more, but also a “specification” of equipment aimed at accentuating the drive feeling on the part of the driver and the response of the vehicle in all driving situations, even in the sportiest ones. The figures speak for themselves: the V10 5.2 FSI drive unit, which maintains the classic central location behind the passenger compartment, releases 570 hp of maximum power and 550 Nm of maximum torque.
Values that allow the new supercar of the Four Rings extremely high road capabilities: the declared maximum speed is 329 km / h (Coupé) and 327 km / h (Spyder), and 3″7 is enough for the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h. and 3”8 depending on the body configuration. The transmission (rear-wheel drive) uses the seven-speed S Tronic double clutch gearbox, whose management software has been revised and corrected according to the traction entrusted to the rear wheels, with self-locking differential. The curb weight is 1,590 kg (Coupé) and 1,695 kg (Spyder) respectively.
The trim and electronics adjustments have also been developed in order to best accommodate rear-wheel drive: the geometries with double triangular aluminum arms and the availability of the Performance sports suspension set with front anti-roll bar in aluminum and carbon fiber mixed with CFRP , the electromechanical steering with variable power assistance according to the specific driving condition and the setup selected through the Audi Drive Select module (on request, and for the first time adopted by Audi R8 RWD, there is dynamic steering that adapts the steering ratio optimal for the car’s instant speed), and the ability to control oversteer by selecting the Audi Drive Select Dynamic program and activating ESC sport mode.
The dynamic components (40:60 weight distribution between front and rear) are completed with a set of 19″ alloy wheels (standard), which can be replaced with 20″ wheels (optional). The braking system includes a kit of self-ventilated and perforated steel discs with a Wave profile, 380 mm in diameter at the front and 356 mm at the rear, with eight-piston fixed calipers at the front and four-piston calipers pistons at the rear. A further step in braking performance (with a corresponding gain in terms of weight) can be achieved through the adoption of a carbon-ceramic braking system with dedicated calipers, also available for the first time among the Audi R8 RWD accessories.
The aesthetic, which is clearly designed to emphasize the speed qualities of the car, is inspired by the GT4 track version and is characterized by the single-frame grille painted in matt black, with vertical strips that divide the front air intakes. the three very traditional horizontal slits that recall the historic Audi Quattro, a wider splitter, the openings at the base of the rear lights and a new grille located in correspondence with the diffuser.
As an option there is the possibility of emphasizing the character of the vehicle through the Black Look packages with a glossy black finish, also for the monogram of the Audi Four Rings and the model indications. Ten body colors are available in the catalog: among these, the Blu Ascari metallic finish, until now the exclusive prerogative of the Audi R8 V10 Performance quattro with permanent all-wheel drive. Further personalization options (from external opaque paint to the use of customized side-blades) are offered by the Audi Exclusive program.
Inside, Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD highlights the semi-anatomical seats with partially electric adjustment and covered in Alcantara, the Plus multifunction steering wheel with two side satellites (four elements in the Performance version), the dashboard embellished with RWD inscription and the Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrumentation with 12.3” display. On request there are anatomical R8 seats.
The novelty of the range, which shares many components with the Audi R8 LMS GT4 ready-to-race version, enters the ordering phase. The proposed variants are two: Coupé (on sale starting from 168,650 euros) and Spyder (from 181,950 euros). Its arrival in Italian Audi dealerships is set for the first quarter of 2022.
