Confirming recent indications relating to the N evolution, the new generation of the Hyundai Elantra mid-range sedan also evolves towards the racing spirit that Hyundai has long included in the acronym “N”, aimed at increasing values on the road, to the aesthetic, and content make-up.

Fitted on the most recent series of the D-segment sedan, Hyundai Elantra N is currently destined overseas. It may be that, in the short term, it will join the European “N” lineup, also because some elements are shared with the i30 N, a compact-fastback shotgun that brings, for example, the same mechatronic setting and a very similar cockpit layout. We will see, therefore: for the moment, the spotlights converge on the ultra-fast US novelty, characterized by its own image significantly different from that of the European Hyundai range, and not only by the presence of a hint of the rear.

Among the specific elements of the Elantra N car body, it is worth noting the large grille, with an almost horizontal design, which connects the Full Led optical groups and extends to the lower air intakes integrated in the bumper (in turn equipped with a subtle spoiler); a small rear wing, positioned at the base of the rear window, and a lower diffuser in which two large section tailpipes have been placed. The red “N” graphics are present in the vehicle moldings.

The passenger compartment is equipped with semi-anatomical seats with integrated “N” monogram, positioned one centimeter lower than the normal Elantra models (to the advantage of the center of gravity, therefore the dynamic response of the vehicle in sporty driving conditions that represent the ideal “terrain” of Elantra N), multifunction sports steering wheel with controls for selecting the driving programs, and sports-type aluminum pedals. The vehicle settings selection menu can be selected via the infotainment screen.

Under the hood, the drive unit of Hyundai Elantra N is the 4-cylinder 2-liter turbocharged engine that already equips Hyundai i30 N and Hyundai Kona N, with 280 hp of maximum power and 392 Nm of maximum torque. The transmission uses the six-speed manual gearbox, or – on request – a new eight-speed automatic gearbox with dual clutch control.

The new automatic transmission itself has three control modes: N Grin Shift, N Power Shift and N Track Sens Shift, each of which handles specific powertrain response levels. Through the N Grin Shift program, for example, power rises to 290 hp for short distances thanks to the activation of an additional boost pressure). The remarkable power of the Hyundai Elantra N is also managed by the N Corner Carving Differential electronic limited slip differential, the Launch Control, the integrated drive axle technology (system “inherited” from Hyundai’s racing experience) and the peculiar IDA geometry that it helps to maintain the car’s performance on any type of road surface. Like the i30 N, Hyundai Elantra N is also equipped with the solenoid valve in the exhaust system; in addition, there is an N Sound Equalizer system, which allows the engine sound to be changed in the passenger compartment by adjusting the bass and the characteristic whistle of the turbocharger.

The Elantra N is coming in late 2021 or early 2022 for around $30,000
